Rethinking the Body Through Freire and Foucault: Notes for an Emancipatory Education

Sun, April 24, 8:00 to 9:30am PDT (8:00 to 9:30am PDT), Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina, Floor: South Building, Level 3, Mission Hills

Abstract

This theoretical essay juxtaposes Paulo Freire's and Michel Foucault’s theorizations about the body to better understand how educational discourse sustains power hierarchies through language characterizations. This dialogue, we argue, locates possibilities for reimagining language teaching in schools as an emacipatory project, thus catalyzing opportunities for the untested feasibility (2019/1970) concerning appropriateness discourses leading to linguistic discrimination.
