Teaching the Way We Were Taught: Living-Reliving and Telling-Retelling Stories of Promising Practices

Abstract

Research tells us that teachers often teach the way they were taught, not necessarily the way they learned to teach in their teacher preparation programs. Lortie (1975) in particular spoke about the influence of this “apprenticeship of observation,” which is widely disseminated in the literature. However, scenarios other than the commonly anticipated one also can play out. For example, some among us live counter stories (Clandinin & Connelly, 1995; _____, 2005) to how they were taught and others experience secondary or even tertiary influences. In this proposed paper, we take up an alternate route as to how teachers’ practices come to be, while using a similar and parallel baseline literature.
