Pláticas and Latinx Preservice Teachers in the New Latino South: A Tool for Healing?

Abstract

Drawing on Latino Critical Theory (Solorzano and Yosso, 2001), and through the use of pláticas (Fierros and Delgado Bernal, 2016), the authors investigate the experiences of Latinx pre-service teachers at a teacher preparation program in the new Latino South. Using pláticas as a methodology allowed us to frame our work with pre-service teachers in a way that positioned them as co-creators of knowledge (Fierros & Delgado Bernal, 2016). Preliminary results show that the experience Latinx pre-service teachers have is not always easy as they often fight the effect of two of the pandemics noted by ladson-Billings (2021): racism and Covid. At the same time they found the pláticas offered them a place where they can find support, solace, and understanding.
