Educational Cyphers: The Promise of Hip-Hop Pedagogy in Teacher Preparation

Abstract

The growing diversity observed in American schools requires broadening the pedagogical approaches taught and practiced in teacher education programs. The purpose of this study was to explore the collaborative experiences of two professors of education as they develop, implement, and reflect on a course centered upon Hip-Hop Pedagogy. Using a framework that integrates Culturally Responsive Pedagogy, Hip-Hop Pedagogy, and Critical Media Pedagogy, we present a qualitative case study informed by critical action research. This study used a variety of reflection interviews, journals, artifacts, and document analysis over a two-year period. Our findings suggest three levels of collaboration in the process of extending and refining student-centered pedagogies. Findings have significant implications for cultivating equitable education systems in K-12 classrooms.
