Drawing from asset-based approaches, this study uses qualitative storytelling methodology to explore how three teachers from Hawaiʻi draw on the knowledge and practices of their students’ families and communities as an integral, consistent component of their place-based pedagogy. With family and community as the foundation for teaching and learning, these teachers incorporate cultural knowledge and literacies and draw on local experts and community resources to create meaningful learning experiences with their students. In doing so, they move the classroom beyond asset-based teaching and learning to more culturally sustaining curriculum, potentially redefining what education looks like in their classrooms.
