Another Kind of Social and Emotional Learning: Race and Healing in Critical Positive Teacher Education

Abstract

Positive Education is a traditional education with a focus on developing academic skills and is complemented by social and emotional learning. However, there are very few studies in positive education engaging in race and ethnicity. The purpose of this conceptual paper is to make a case for Critical Positive Teacher Education which encompasses two main goals: 1) to increase diversity research in positive psychology and specifically, Positive Education and 2) using Critical Race Theory to understand the teacher retention and recruitment challenges through a racial justice lens. This conceptual paper is significant because it contributes to the growing field of positive education while critically examining the role those historical structural inequalities play in education.
