This paper outlines the anxieties, frustrations, and voices of current HBCU students as they faced the choice of if or when to return to their institutions in the summer of 2020. This mixed-methods study, spanning 16 historically Black colleges and universities with more than 4,500 student responses, outlines how four colliding pandemics had a direct impact on student experiences and success. Findings show that not only did students voice their need for the campus environment to be successful, but grappled with the stressors of not returning and struggled to maintain their mental health as a result.
