Designing and Developing a Credibility Assessment Online Module Emphasizing Metacognitive Strategies and Expert Demonstration

Abstract

This paper shares the researcher’s experiences in the design and development of a credibility assessment online module for undergraduate learners. This instruction emphasized two strategies: metacognitive prompts and expert demonstration. With the explosion of the Internet, misinformation can easily spread in the online environment. To combat misinformation, individuals need to have sufficient skills in credibility assessment – the ability to assess the credibility of information. Credibility assessment has been shown to be a difficult and complicated task online, however. The analysis, design, development, and evaluation phases of the instructional design process of the online module are documented. Researchers and educators can consider the lessons learned and design principles from this case, which can inform decision-making in their own situations.
