Exploring Mursion as a Tool for Equity Pedagogy in the 21st Century: A Pilot Study

Abstract

This qualitative pilot study aimed to explore the usefulness of mixed reality simulation (e.g. Mursion) in elementary mathematics teacher preparation. Teacher educators should become informed about which tools and remote experiences remain worthwhile as they transition back to in-person learning environments. The single case study explored the usefulness of Mursion for practicing Number Talks as dialogic strategy in mathematics education. Study results were mixed in that participating preservice teachers reported value in the experience. At the same time, the experience did not lead them to elicit explanation of student thinking. The pilot left the research team with further questions about usefulness of Mursion for the building capacity for equity pedagogy among preservice teachers in elementary mathematics.
