Navigating Inclusion of Familial Practices in a Childcare Center for Newcomers

Abstract

Early childhood education programs are often one of newcomers’ first encounters with formal institutional structures in the new context and assume a critical role in their adaptation and integration. This participatory action research study explores the dynamics within a child care centre where migrant and non-migrant educators and newcomer families bring many diverse, competing notions about how to teach and care for young children. Framed by critical pedagogy, the co-researchers are cultivating collaborative intercultural spaces for resolving tensions arising in the program. Qualitative data are being generated in the form of field notes, interviews, and focus groups. The presentation focuses on mealtimes as sites wherein educators navigate cultural tensions to adhere to familial desires.
