Creating Communities of Care: Cultural Navigators and Academic Support for First-Generation Students of Color

Abstract

This qualitative case study showcases the perspectives of first generation college students of color and their experiences with advising processes at a historically white institution. Findings revealed the importance of having cultural navigators who are part of a larger culturally responsive support system. As institutions of higher education are articulating a commitment to cultivating equitable educational systems in the 21st century, this study demonstrates merely providing college access to first generation students of color is insufficient, as these students need intentionally planned and culturally responsive and competent systems of support via communities of care. Although this study focused on academic advising, it has relevance for any university student services department that desires for its students to be academically successful.
