School Accountability and Student Well-Being: A Comparison of the United States and South Korea

Abstract

The thesis of this study is that the overload of accountability in school may become an unintentional but systemic factor that undermines student wellbeing. Using the large-scale data of Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018, this study finds the possibility that school accountability overload is significantly associated with intense competition culture at schools, raising fear of failure of students. The present study examines the country variation in the association between school accountability and student wellbeing, covering South Korea and the United States.
