Abstract

This paper engages some of the historical tethers and antecedents of contemporary health and pathology discourses in education research and policy. Spiritualism, "American Nervousness", and scientific hygiene are considered with respect to the formation of modern schooling and ongoing concerns amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic.
