Building a More Resilient Education System: Lessons Learned From Emergency Remote Teaching During COVID-19

Abstract

School closures are not new and had advice during previous disease outbreaks been heeded school leaders would have been better prepared for the COVID-19 induced school closures. Our mixed methods study aims to explore lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic. We extend the emergency remote teaching (ERT) framework to proactively inform changes to the education system to build in resiliency. The participants included preK-12th grade teachers in the state of Georgia who completed an online survey and follow-up interview. Our findings suggest that resiliency would be improved by maximizing the number of constants in place prior to the start of a crisis, and they highlight a need for discussions to occur about the purpose of education during times of crisis.
