Inbreeding Versus Mobility as Faculty Hiring Strategies? A 10-Year Comparative Study on Chile and Korea

Abstract

Focusing on selective engineering schools in Chile and Korea, the study explains the two major strategies for faculty hiring in an international and local context: hiring from nations with the more advanced higher education system (mobility) and from their own graduates (inbreeding). The study makes a unique contribution by comparing the trends in these dimensions in the last ten years, intertwined with other changes in the faculty demographics. The preliminary results suggested a significant role of prestigious U.S. institutions as well as an increased level of inbreeding at the PhD level, particularly among the female faculty. The results showed a continued increase in the BA inbreeding, raising important questions for promoting equitable educational systems in the respective countries.
