Orchestrating Learning Activities in Open and Flexible Learning Environments

Abstract

This presentation focuses on how teaching and learning are organized in open and flexible learning environments and how teachers and students use the new space in their activities. Video recorded and transcribed naturally occurring classroom interaction of modern schools are analyzed through multimodal conversation analysis. The results show the learning practices rely heavily on self-regulated learning and peer learning, and teachers’ creation of individualized space of instructional interaction. Teachers’ practices for making themselves available are crucial for students in accomplishing their learning tasks. The findings suggest that the teacher’s role in terms of providing sensitive support and timely guidance for learning is of critical importance, and notwithstanding the strong emphasis of new curricula on student autonomy and self-regulated learning.
