Documenting Pre-Kindergarten Family Experiences During a Pandemic: Learning From COVID-19

Abstract

Discussions on the importance of early childhood education continue to dominate policy and funding arenas. Especially given the COVID-19 pandemic, early learning initiatives have the potential to provide equitable access to social-emotional and academic supports for children and families. This study represents a researcher-practitioner partnership focused on conducting formative research on a city-wide prekindergarten initiative. Using a mixed methods approach this investigation examined children and families’ prekindergarten experiences within the context of the pandemic. This design included the integration of parents/guardians’ voice through interview findings to highlight how the initiative has adapted and increased access throughout the pandemic. Findings show this initiative continued to support children and families’ needs through the pandemic. This presentation focuses on implications and lessons learned.
