Initial Results of a Public Health Pipeline Program for Underrepresented Minority (URM) Students in Buffalo, New York

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to review the outcomes of the first year of a public health learning academy for underrepresented minority (URM) high school students in the Buffalo, NY area: The School of Public Health and Health Professions Pathways Academy. Methods: 14 URM high school students successfully completed the course consisting of presentations by faculty, community organizations and current undergraduate students. Results: The students showed an increase in public health knowledge and self-efficacy of succeeding in a public health career. Conclusion: This program has the potential to increase enrollment of URM students in undergraduate public health and health profession programs, but more long-term follow up is needed.
