This qualitative study explores how Latinx families’ high educational expectations impact Latinx college students’ sense-making of their college experiences and future aspirations. Although Latinx students are going to college at higher rates, their unique college experiences and struggles warrant attention. The purpose of this study is to examine how Latinx families could be a source of support as well as pressure. Preliminary results reveal that Latinx college students embrace their families’ values and approaches. However they also experience challenges and unfamiliarity while in college, yet, they avoid discussing negative experiences with family. Findings from this study will support the retention, graduation and success of Latinx students within and beyond college.
