Emergency Education: Examining the Impact of Synchronous Offerings During COVID-19 Online Learning

The onset of COVID-19 sent schools across the U.S. into emergency online learning overnight. While existing literature has examined the impact of synchronous offerings within online learning, COVID-19 related school closures offer a unique opportunity to examine the impact of live communication between teachers and students during emergency online learning. This study utilized the American Educator Panel’s 2020 COVID-19 Distance Learning Survey to investigate associations between synchronous instructional offerings, student contact, curriculum coverage, and activity completion during COVID-19 related online learning. Failure to offer synchronous meetings was significantly associated with the lowest reported rates of student contact, curriculum coverage, and weekly activity completion. Further investigation is needed to quantitatively examine emergency online education offerings.
