Abstract

Deliberate practice is considered a crucial aspect of improving performance and developing expertise, as well as a differentiator between novices and experts. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Practi, a domain-independent educational mobile app, in increasing students’ performance. Participants were n = 32 undergraduate students enrolled in a second-year introductory Numerical Analysis course at a large North-American university. They were encouraged to use Practi and prompted to solve Practi quizzes on a regular basis throughout the course to promote spaced retrieval and enhance long-term knowledge retention. A paired t-test analysis showed that Practi improved students’ quiz performance in the course. Implications and directions for future research and practice in post-secondary mathematics education are discussed.
