Cultivating Ethics of Care in the Participatory Visual Research for, With, and About Recent Immigrant Girls on Instagram

Abstract

To counteract the “body-at-risk” deficit discourse driven by neoliberal healthism, this study employed a participatory visual methodology with, about, and for recent immigrant minoritized girls to visually examine and (re)present their embodied subjectivities on Instagram. While recognizing the intricacy of ethical concerns in both participatory visual method and social media research, this paper outlines the ways in which the participating RIM girls and the researcher navigated various ethical tensions and dilemmas throughout the research process by the ‘ethics of care’ and the collaboration-driven approach. The paper concludes with a call for future qualitative social media researchers to engage in rigorous reflexivity and relationality practices to establish transparency and trust not just as researchers but also as a human beings.
