Identification of the Gifted Beyond the Limits of Cultural Background and Poverty Conditions

Abstract

Gifted students coming from culturally/linguistic diverse contexts are often overlooked in programs for the gifted, due to disparities in academic achievement. Inequalities on the identification processes of students living under social-economic low levels, and ethnic-linguistic diverse contexts, prevent those children and youths to attend programs for talent development. Peru, a transition country with 25 state-funded High schools for the high performers, ought to face this situation, in order to include students living under extreme poverty conditions - mostly attending rural schools - in its provision. Results of an identification process which aims to visualize the rural and ethnic - linguistic diverse minority youths will be presented, in order to promote equality in fostering talents beyond cultural background.
