Mon, April 25, 8:00 to 9:30am PDT (8:00 to 9:30am PDT), Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina, Floor: South Building, Level 3, Cardiff

Abstract

Black boys are historically and consistently under-represented in Gifted education. The disconcerting statistics for Black males identified for gifted education probe the question: “Where are the Gifted Black boys?” The research asks: What were the school experiences like during K - 12 to college for Black males? How do Black men describe the teacher’s role in their educational trajectory? How do Black males describe key elements of their success in the medical field? This qualitative study utilizes semi-structured interviews to explore how three high-achieving Black male Physicians were overlooked for gifted programs. This study aims to advocate and promote positive self-identity and self-efficacy for minority students through storytelling as it applies to Critical Race Theory and improve Gifted identification practices.
