Abstract

In early 2015, the Charlie Hebdo attacks thrust immigration and education policies into the spotlight in France as never before. This paper presents a case study of a French class for newly arrived immigrant children in Paris, exploring how French values including secularism (laïcité) are constructed through classroom curriculum and instruction, as explicitly mandated by the 2015 changes in education policy. It also explores how educators in France approach the education of immigrant children, from a stance of assimilation or integration.
