Lifelong Outcomes for Minoritized Women Participants in a 40-Year-Old Out-of-School-Time STEM Program: A Narrative Analysis

Abstract

In line with the theme of cultivating equitable education systems, this study utilizes narrative analysis to examine the lifelong impacts of a 39-year-old out-of-school time (OST) high school STEM learning program called Women in Natural Sciences (EW). This program aimed to reduce inequalities experienced by women of color (WOC) from low-income backgrounds in STEM education and careers. Critical Race Feminism, Ecological Systems Theory, and Community Cultural Wealth guided data analysis on ten alumnae’s semi-structured interviews to better understand the program’s impact on WOC’s career and life trajectories. The findings revealed the following themes: (1) transformative culture of sisterhood amongst WOC participants; (2) influence of new life and STEM-related experiences; and (3) inspiration for lifelong dedication to education and community outreach.
