Family engagement can benefit students, families, and educators, but knowledge and strategies about it are not always adequately included in teacher preparation programs. Many new teachers feel ill prepared to work with families, particularly because cultural and racial divides are expanding between these groups. We evaluated faculty and student knowledge and use of an online resource on family engagement that was specifically developed for this western university, using surveys and interviews. Although faculty members expressed convictions that family engagement was important, many did not integrate the online resources meaningfully into their courses. This result is similar to others across the country, and insights into remedies can benefit other teacher preparation programs.
