Using Radical Self-Honesty to Move Toward Hoopono and Cultivate Equitable Education Systems

Abstract

This study explores the crucial relationship between theory and practice as a key feature of facing those deep disparities in our own community and in our systems of education made obvious by the shut down of schools during the COVID-19 pandemic. For our Hawaiian culture based secondary teacher preparation program, our theory and frame tapped into (k)new knowledge, or ʻike kūpuna, elder knowledge as a frame to collect and bring clarity to our stories of survivance. These stories, as well as the collective dialogic using ʻōiwi, native practices and processes led us to multidimensional realizations of potential unseen and unknown by former generations.
