Incorporating Research Into Undergraduate Geoscience Curriculum: A Design-Based Research Approach to Developing Open Educational Resources

Abstract

This proposal reports part of the data collected from a multi-year collaborative design-based research (DBR) project, focusing on the first two phases of the project. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted to analyze the variances in the adapted 32-item Meaningful Learning in the Laboratory Instrument (MLLI) (Galloway & Bretz, 2015). Qualitative analysis of the interviews of OER development team members revealed four main themes focusing on the challenges for design and development, challenges in adopting OER, potential/perceived benefits of OER in STEM education, and recommendations for instructor and student preparation. The findings from this research may inform educators and researchers in STEM education of the potential benefits and challenges when designing course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) using technology.
