Credentialed Imposter: Healing Black Professionals Who Experience Trauma on Predominantly White Institution Campuses

Abstract

Research shows that Black professionals on primarily white institution (PWI) campuses experience more racism than other ethnic groups, which often leads to imposter thoughts. This session is concerned with acknowledging, accepting, and healing the unique mental health trauma that Black professionals commonly face on PWI campuses. Through research and discussion, participants are encouraged to embody vulnerability by understanding and identifying their unconscious coping methods. Healing strategies are adopted from critical race theorists who employ culturally responsive and racially informed interventions. Justice will also be discussed around campus policies that negatively affect the mental state of Black professionals at PWIs. This presentation is for any ethnic-sub group allies who desire to help maintain the mental health of Black professionals at PWIs.
