Peer Aggression and Student Engagement: Mediating Role of Culture of Equity and Teasing and Bullying

Abstract

The objective of this study is to examine whether the culture of equity (CoE) and prevalence of teasing and bullying (PTB) mediate the relationship between peer aggression (PA) and student engagement (SE). A student version of school climate dimensions, i.e. PA, CoE, SE, and PTB, was administered to 1371 students from ten private schools in Ahmedabad. Bootstrapping analysis was used to test the mediational model of PTB and CoE as parallel mediators of the relationship between PA and SE. Our results indicate that PTB & CoE fully mediate the relationship between PA and SE. This study provides evidence that suggests targeting CoE and bullying interventions may have a meaningful effect on PA and subsequently lead to higher levels of SE.
