In These Changing Times, What Do Stakeholders Value in Online Science Laboratories?

Abstract

The literature reports that undergraduate online science laboratories are as effective as face-to-face laboratories, but general perceptions remain skeptical. To address this incongruity, this study examined the current status of online science laboratory environments as perceived by three stakeholder groups: university administrators, instructors, and students. Interview data were collected and coded via thematic analysis through the lens of laboratory learning objectives. Our data showed that participants perceived that current online laboratories were effective at providing scientific methods and reasoning skills, but were limited in the ability to provide practical skills learning, focusing on the necessity of physical manipulation. Participants agreed that more advanced simulations, focused on realistic laboratory environments and instructor guidance, are essential to providing successful online science laboratories.
