Adaptation and Innovation for Educational Continuity During the Pandemic in Low-Performing Schools in Chile

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has a negative impact on education worldwide, and particularly in low-performing schools, exacerbated by disadvantaged conditions of their contexts. Through a case study of three Chilean low-performing schools, this paper explored their responses to the challenges of the pandemic. Precarious connectivity, increased workload of teachers and leaders, and family conditions to support students’ learning at home were identified as challenges. To address them, schools collected data about families’ needs, developed collective actions to innovate and integrate technology in teaching, and took advantage of the guidelines of educational authorities. Based on these results, the impact of the pandemic on the improvement of low-performing schools and lessons to mitigate said impact once the crisis has been overcome are discussed.
