Using Project-Based STEM Moment to Enhance Preservice Teachers' Knowledge, Readiness, and Disposition in Mathematics Teaching

Mon, April 25, 8:00 to 9:30am PDT (8:00 to 9:30am PDT), SIG Virtual Rooms, SIG-Problem-Based and Project-Based Learning Virtual Roundtable Session Room

Abstract

The purpose of this project was to engage pre-service teachers in learning how to provide STEM access to underrepresented students, such as ELLs, by designing and integrating a project-based STEM moment task into K-8 math curriculum. Three classes of math methods were involved in this study. The pre-service teachers participated in learning about STEM integration, developing and integrating STEM Moment with project-based learning activities with video to demonstrate, and sharing the STEM Moment with peers. They were assessed by pre- and post-questionnaires and STEM moment tasks. The results of the study show that the participants overall demonstrated a great deal of learning from doing the STEM moment in their disposition, readiness in teaching STEM, and knowledge of STEM integration.
