This paper is based on a qualitative study of 20 HBCU provosts using one-on-one interviews and document analysis. Findings reveal internal and external barriers (e.g., resources, board [mis]management) and supports (e.g., academic alliances, accreditation findings) when executing their various functions as CAOs. Key implications for policy and practice are discussed.
