The Street Belongs to Us: Autofantasía and Other Chicana/o/x Queer Pedagogies

Abstract

There are very different news stories about curriculum of late. There are parents holding signs protesting the use of “critical race theory,” and there are state legislatures approving ethnic studies statewide curricula for public education students. While they may hold opposing views, both are an expression of concern over how race and ethnicity are taught in schools. How do you teach about contested topics of race and ethnicity? What do queer narratives contribute to the teaching of race and ethnicity? Through this paper, I will show how the middle grade book The Street Belongs to Us (Author, 2021), an example of the genre of “autofantasía” (Millán, 2015) and queer Chicana/o/x Pedagogies, could be an important resource for ethnic studies curricula.
