A Critical Race Interview Study: Reflections of Former Charter School Administrators on the Pushout Phenomenon

Abstract

This qualitative interview study focuses on the reflections of charter school administrators on the pushout phenomenon. Drawing on their experiences in discipline related roles, three participants offer their views on the ways in which they witnessed and perpetuated pushout. Their recollections are analyzed through the lens of Critical Race Theory and offers a commentary on how they served to disrupt and reproduce inequitable systems within charter schools as well as adding to the literature on charter school pushout. This analysis offers insights for the field of education leadership as well as administrator preparation.
