Developing Globally Competent Citizens and Leaders for 21st Century: A Transnational Study on Higher Education Policy, Leadership, and Praxis

Abstract

Global citizens and leaders who understand and care about the pressing and complex global issues are more likely to live and work in the 21st century in a productive and responsible way. As the key driver of human, economic, scientific and social development, higher education institutions have the ethical and educational responsibility to help all students develop global competency through inclusive global competence education. This transnational mixed-methods study compared and examined the internationalization policy, global programs, and faculty’s engagement in global competence education in 46 top-ranked universities in Canada, the USA, U.K, and China. Findings revealed the differences and similarities in national contexts, institutional policies, program strategies, and faculty praxis in global competence education in four countries.
