Needs-Based Community Development: Establishing a Curriculum for Underserved Communities

Abstract

Needs-based community development is a practice of community development that equips members of a community with the tools to engage in the development of their community. Target areas are community’s that are classified as urban and rural limited resourced communities. Facilitators of NBCD curriculum development are students at tertiary institutions of higher learning, which will enable participants from different disciplines such as education, community development, and sociology to engage in the conceptual, formulation, and execution of the curriculum in the community. This paper will discuss the importance of NBCD, identify potential benefits of community education for community members, and how college students can utilize NBCD to engage in practice and exercise theory to enhance underserved communities.
