Afro-Diasporic Pedagogy: Toward a Transnational Theoretical Framework on Black People's Educational Thought

Abstract

African Diaspora shapes a shared space in which Africans and African descendants' modern culture and politics have trespassed Nation-state’s frontiers. The present paper aims to postulate an idea tentatively called Afrodiasporic Pedagogy. This idea engenders the struggle, experience, wisdom of Africans and their descendants to question, resist, transform, redesign Eurocentric educational systems across diasporic sites. Focusing on black people’s struggle to transform public schooling in Brazil and the United States, this work intends also to contribute to lightening the plots of black educators that have challenged hegemonic structure of schooling. These educational practices proposed by black people reframe the value of African history to assert Africans and their descendants' humanity.
