Evidence Based Approach to Teach Literacy: Effectiveness of English Literacy Workshops Among ESL Teachers

Mon, April 25, 2:30 to 4:00pm PDT (2:30 to 4:00pm PDT), World Educational Research Association Virtual Meeting Rooms, WERA Virtual Meeting Room 2

Abstract

Reading is a complex cognitive skill, which relies on successful teaching of sub-skills to develop as a proficient reader. Research in reading development shows that early success in reading is a powerful predictor of late literacy achievement. Education systems and techniques used across the world are different for both children and teachers especially for non-native English teachers and learners. To teach the basic components of reading explicitly, systematically and sequentially in classrooms, this study examined the effectiveness of literacy workshops offered to elementary level teachers in Pakistan. Pre-and-post workshop assessments helped with the identification of essential components of comprehensive teaching and learning system that could further help children in developing core knowledge of language and skills especially for ELLs.
