A New Language Norm: Revaluing the Essence of Translanguaging and Reimagining Equitable Education Systems

Abstract

Translanguaging is a naturally occurring use of language that bilingual/multilingual speakers employ. Translanguaging not only highlights a sophisticated use of language but also illuminates what speakers do with language. When translanguaging, speakers shift from one language to another while maintaining this use of language as one linguistic repertoire. This paper emphasizes the importance of translanguaging by sharing stories highlighting the agency adult, multilingual speakers from the Southwest Borderland utilize when drawing on their multiple and diverse linguistic repertoires communicating in various settings and on various topics. We also share strategies for building on K-12 students’ languages as resources for teaching and learning.
