Structural and Institutional Racism in Schools

Abstract

Özlem Sensoy will describe how teacher educators can help students to understand the nature of oppression and institutionalized racism. She will also describe vivid and compelling examples, thought experiments, and anecdotes that will help the audience comprehend complex concepts related to diversity, social justice, and equity. Sensoy will draw upon her years of experience working with predominantly White teachers and her deep knowledge of diversity issues to construct explicit definitions of complex concepts such as racism, classism, internalized oppression, and White fragility.
