The SCALE Framework and Emancipation

Abstract

Classrooms can build on the assets and experiences of learners by engaging them as both leaders of their own learning and as members of learning organizations and cultural communities. The SCALE Framework for Emancipatory Education and Leadership is for practitioners, policymakers, and community organizers committed to the affirmative development of learners and cultural transformation of learning organizations in service of the emancipatory aims of education and leadership. Informed largely by Gordon’s work on the affirmative development of the academic ability of students, the SCALE Framework supports learners and leaders in the advancement of educational equity and liberation through deeper learning and engagement with the following five concepts: Self-Knowledge, Culture, Agency, Liberation, and Ethics/Enduring Values.
