Updating Eisner: Incorporating Indigenous and Digital Inquiry Into Arts-Based Educational Research

Abstract

After a brief presentation that reviews Eisner’s legacy and discusses the need to continually update it, some of Eisner’s academic “grandchildren” will discuss their attempts to update Eisner’s notion of arts-based inquiry. Two presenters will describe their attempts to link Indigenous research methods with arts-based inquiry. Another presenter will discuss and illustrate how Eisner’s notion of arts based educational research opens the door for the sort of digital research he has been doing. Even the most innovative research traditions become little more than stale historical artifacts without periodic updating. The session will provide detailed descriptions of two updates of Eisner’s notion of arts-based inquiry and, then, use these updates to stimulate a discussion about other possible ways to update Eisner.
