Abstract

Students’ evidence-based reasoning is core to many definitions of critical thinking and argumentation. Despite the foundational nature of evidence-based reasoning for critical thinking, students’ conceptions and considerations of evidence have been underexamined in prior research – with evidence principally considered as only present or absent in support of claims. This symposium brings together researchers working, across domains, to discuss (a) what evidence is, (b) what higher-order cognitive processes students need to reason about evidence, and (c) how evidence-based reasoning may be fostered. Presentations featured investigate students from elementary school to university, reasoning in history/social studies and science, using quantitative and qualitative methods, to robustly understand the nature and challenges of evidence-based reasoning across domains and how these may be overcome.
