Combining International Student Assessments for Country-Level Longitudinal Analyses

Abstract

International large-scale assessments like TIMSS and PISA have a cross-sectional design. Data from different studies or study cycles, however, can be combined to realize research designs with a longitudinal component on country level. The session addresses measurement issues as well as methodological advantages of longitudinal trend data to study the institutional determinants of student achievement in comparative studies. One paper links data from different international assessments to cover a time period of 35 years. The two other contributions use difference-in-differences and fixed-effects model to exploit longitudinal variation at country level.
