21st Century Teaching and Learning to Foster Tribal Nation-Building in Predominantly White Institutions

Abstract

We address AERA’s call “on understanding and redressing educational inequalities and building systems that embrace equity and justice” by exploring how predominantly white institutions can redesign their systems to engage Native knowledges and tribal nation-building. This symposium examines partnerships for building strategic alliances between Indigenous teachers, non-Indigenous teachers, universities, and tribal nations that seek to impact collective and long-term efforts for supporting and strengthening Indigenous futures through a focus on tribal nation-building. The guiding questions for our session are: what can predominantly white institutions do that align with and support tribal nation-building? What processes are necessary to transform education to align with/support tribal nation-building in the 21st century?
