Explicitly Antiracist Research: Exploring Possibility and Necessity

Abstract

Despite a renewed commitment to anti-racism in higher education institutions in recent years, concrete action has been slow to follow. Researchers are poorly prepared to understand how race, class, gender and other forms of oppression are embedded in the structures of their research plans, but there is also a great need to explore how we, as researchers, can and should take an explicitly anti-racist stance in and through our research. In this roundtable, we examine new possibilities and necessities for anti-racist, anti-oppressive research methods and tools to break down structures of injustice and white supremacy within academia and beyond. Participants will explore the Anti-Racist Research Audit Tool and radical reconceptualizations of validity and impact rooted in participatory inquiry.
