Session Type: Symposium
This session brings together authors who collaborated on a multi-year project that centered the dynamic and unbounded linguistic practices of emergent bilinguals and led to critical understandings and implementation of translanguaging theory and pedagogy in research and schools. It highlights the structure and non-negotiable stance of the project, its work in schools with different programs and populations, the impact of literacy instruction and literature that starts from the language practices of emergent bilingual students, and the role of translanguaging in teacher education programs. It will share the success, lessons, and applications from the project that brought together researchers, doctoral students, school leaders, and teachers to create a new normal in the education of bilingual students in the US and beyond.
